Assistant Professor of Art History Florencia San Martín will be in conversation with Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures and Latin American and Latino Studies Matthew Bush about two recent publications edited by Prof. San Martín about contemporary art in Chile. Congratulations to Emily Pope-Obeda from the History Department, who has been awarded a Manuscript Review Workshop grant for her project, "National Expulsions in a Transnational World: The Global Dimensions of American Deportation Practice in the Interwar Era." Look for the next round of funding in Spring 2025. 

This summer Lehigh became an institutional sponsor for the National Humanities Center, allowing our undergraduate students to apply for a place on the National Humanities Leadership Council, which offers professional development and mentorship opportunities. The application period for the 2024—25 is now open!

Council members take part in a unique series of discussion sessions with thought leaders which explore the importance of humanistic perspectives in contemporary society. Selected students will have the opportunity to pursue specific individual or collective humanities projects and will network with professionals who represent a range of fields including academia, nonprofit work, the arts, science communication, museum studies and curation, and activism and advocacy.

Applicants are NOT required to have declared concentrations or majors in humanities fields. The Council is open to any undergraduate students from NHC-sponsoring institutions with an interest in the humanities. Applications will be accepted through October 11, 2024. Student applicants may access the application portal here.

Last week, author and futurist Ken Liu visited Lehigh and gave two amazing talks on AI and technology. Each event sparked interesting discussion about the future of work, robots, and jobs today.

Asian Studies program and Humanitites Center co-sponsor year-long sci-fi reading group centered around perspectives of imagination. One doesn’t need to be an educator to understand that humans learn best about a topic they find interesting and fun…like science fiction.
