Overview

The Humanities Center at Lehigh University supports a variety of faculty and student-led projects and academic groups. Our goal is to provide a space for interdisciplinary collaboration in the humanities.

We host seminars, workshops, and working groups to support research, publications, and discussions. The Humanities Center invites scholars to give lectures and to participate in symposia on various topics in the humanities. See our archive of events here or visit our past events page.

Manuscript Review Workshops
2024-2025 Academic Year

Apply to the Lehigh Humanities Center for up to $3,000 to fund external reviewers’ honoraria and expenses for a manuscript workshop. During this workshop, external and internal reviewers discuss the manuscript’s readiness for publication and offer concrete suggestions for its improvement. This grant may supplement department or other funding sources.

The Manuscript Review Program provides helpful and timely feedback to tenure-stream humanities faculty preparing monographs or other similarly large academic writing projects. Junior faculty / first book projects will be given priority. The workshops include:

  • intense discussion about a faculty author’s manuscript;
  • generate specialized, constructive feedback for improving the manuscript;
  • develop strategies for finding suitable publishers for the manuscript (re)submission;
  • create scholarly networks that familiarize colleagues nationally and internationally with humanities research occurring at Lehigh and promote Lehigh faculty as leading scholars in their fields.

To apply:

  • CV
  • One page abstract
  • Tentative list of invitees and schedule for the workshop

Deadline: September 15, 2024

Futurists Collective: The Humanities in the Age of AI and Other Emerging Technologies

How do we ensure that the design, development, and uses of emerging technologies like AI, robotics, and genetic engineering prioritize and reflect human interests? The humanities and STEM fields in the academy increasingly operate in separate spheres, leaving little room for conversation and intellectual exchange. This lack of serious engagement across highly specialized fields of knowledge has extended beyond academia to hamper serious public discussion about the ethical and societal impact of emerging technologies.

As a first step toward remedying this situation here on the Lehigh campus, we are creating a communal space at the Lehigh Humanities Center that will allow for conversation, collaboration, and a supportive space for faculty and graduate students to work. With this new initiative, we will be hosting a series of interdisciplinary workshops to bring together Lehigh faculty from the humanities, sciences, and engineering with leading scholars in their respective fields, artists, and writers working on the intersections of the humanities and technology. We view these workshops not as an end but rather as the start of new collaborations and working relationships.
